As art director, my involvement for each image varied. Sometimes a designer needs a concept and a few extra sketches. Sometimes a designer just needs to be told: “That’s amazing.” The process was unique for each.

Red is a play that uses Mark Rothko’s late period of abstract paintings as a vehicle to ask “what is art?”

The rights to the play dictate that no Rothko art may be used for promotion of the show. So that’s my art.

As much as Rothko wanted the viewer to be consumed by his art, so too was he consumed by this single form of expression. The handwriting is my best attempt to forge Rothko’s; the source is just one scribbled note I found.

Shakespeare’s Amazing Cymbeline has a wager, forbidden love, a fake death by magic potion, lost sons of royalty, an evil stepmother, tension over who will wear the crown and more. In other words, it’s every Shakespeare play ever rolled into one.

The adaptor/director wanted to convey King Cymbeline’s grotesque world (think Game of Thrones, not Cinderella) and the prevailing gossip and political discourse of the day: who will inherit the throne?
